Midterm 5

Progressive JPG image
First, I opened the monster.jpg in GIMPShop. I used the Paintbrush tool to write my name, saved the file by selecting “Save a copy” from the File menu and named it “Midterm 5.jpg”. For effect purposes, I chose the highest quality (100), checked the “Progressive” box and saved the file.

Interlaced PNG image

For this image, I repeated the same steps as above, except that I saved the file as “Midterm 5.png”, checked the “Interlacing (Adam 7)” box, chose “Compression Level 9” and clicked “OK”.

Progressive vs. Interlacing

Progressive image takes time to download one line at a time from top to bottom until the entire image is downloaded. By way of contrast, Interlaced image displays an instant but blurry image before the entire image is downloaded. However, in the end they both take the same time to download.
